Iron Oxide-clay Mineral Association in Brazilian Oxisols: a Magnetic Separation Study

-Selected Brazilian Oxisols were sampled and submitted to high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) to study the iron oxide-clay mineral associations. The soils, derived from four different parent materials, have mineralogy dominated mostly by hematite, goethite, and kaolinite. Gibbsite appears in most soil samples. The high-gradient magnetic separation showed good separation for some soils, as ...

BET specific surface area and pore structure of MOFs determined by hydrogen adsorption at 20 K.

Low-pressure high-resolution hydrogen adsorption for the metal-organic framework MIL-101 are measured at 19.5 K and pressures below 57 kPa. The BET specific surface area and micropore volume are determined and compared to results from nitrogen adsorption at 77 K. Steps in the hydrogen adsorption isotherm are correlated to the pore structure of MIL-101.

Me a S U Rement of the Specific Surface Area of Clays

-The specific surface area, S, of a clay is commonly measured by the adsorption of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether (EGME); however, this method can be tedious and time consuming, especially if the clay is saturated with a monovalent, highly hydrated cation. An alternative method for measuring S was developed involving infrared internal reflectance spectroscopy. This method is based on the disco...

Mineralogy, surface properties and electrokinetic behaviour of kaolin clays derived from naturally occurring pegmatite and granite deposits

This paper presents research on the surface characteristics, specific surface area (SSA), cation exchange capacity (CEC) and the electrophoretic mobility (EPM) of kaolin clays obtained from different naturally occurring pegmatite and granite deposits worldwide. Particular emphasis was placed on studying the influence of ancillary minerals on these properties, as well as the diversity in morphol...

Surface Complexation Modeling of Phosphate Adsorption by Water Treatment Residual

Use of water treatment plant residuals (WTR), as a soil amendment is a promising alternative to landfill disposal. Unfortunately, WTR has a propensity to bind with phosphate, which is an important plant nutrient. Phosphate may be added to WTR prior to soil application. This type of pretreatment may convert WTR from a phosphate consumer to a phosphate supplier. The binding of phosphate to WTR is...
